19U American Legion Baseball: Fairfield Falls to Danbury in Midweek Game

Danbury Westerners 19U Legion defeated Fairfield 9-4 on Wednesday evening at Kiwanis Field in Fairfield. 

Danbury got out of the gates fast and never looked back. They played strong defense behind starting pitcher JT Gunzy. 

The Westerners got two runs in the first inning Drew Martin drove an RBI double to right field and Casey Katz followed up with a sacrifice fly to left field. 

Fairfield got a run back in the bottom half of the frame. Matt Vivona led off with a double. Later in the inning, with Vivona at third, Charlie Mulhall hit a ground ball to short that was misplayed and Vivona was able to come in and score. 

In the third, Danbury tacked on. With two on and one out, Katz hit an RBI double to left to make the score 3-1 and put runners at second and third. 

Nick Mercing then hit a sacrifice fly to left field and the throw from left was high and went to the backstop, allowing both runners to come in and score. 

Danbury added three more in the fourth to break the game open. 

Fairfield got one in the sixth to inch closer. With two outs, Liam Grady singled to left-center to plate a run. 

Danbury tacked on a run in the top of the seventh. 

Fairfield got two in the seventh but couldn't get any closer. Anderson singled to left to bring home Vivona who doubled to lead off the inning. The next batter, Charlie Swanson, grounded out to plate another run.
