19U American Legion Baseball: Fairfield Tops Greenwich Behind Strong Outing From Montiero

Fairfield 19U American Legion baseball defeated the Greenwich Cannon's 5-1 on Sunday morning at Kiwanis Field in Fairfield.

CJ Montiero was dominant on the mound for Fairfield, throwing a complete game, allowing 1 unearned run on two hits (back-to-back), while walking two and striking out seven.

The Cannons took a 1-0 lead in top of the first.  They put the first two guys on as Jake Mondshein walked and then Ben Nash reached on an error as Mondshein went to third. Hunter Gruenstrass then grounded into a fielders choice as Mondshein was able to come home to score.

In the top of the second, Cage Lasley would reach on an infield single and advance to second on an error. He would advance to third on a groundout but we stranded there. The only other hit against Montiero would be a leadoff single in the fourth and the runner would get no further.

Fairfield got on the board in the second. Sam Swanson and Sean McAdams each reached on errors to set up second and third. Two batters later, Joey D'Elia lined a single to left field to bring home Swanson and McAdams and give the Militia a 2-1 lead. The next batter, Matt Sawyer, would single over first base to bring home D'Elia, who had stole second, to increase the lead to 3-1.

Fairfield would tack on in the bottom of the fourth. Sawyer lined a two-out single to left field to plate McAdams. Then, with D'Elia on third and Sawyer on first, Fairfield pulled off a double steal and D'Elia was able to come in to score to put Fairfield up 5-1.

From there, Montiero would sail, including retiring the final seven he faced.
