19U American Legion Baseball: Fairfield Splits Sunday Doubleheader With Westport
Fairfield 19U Legion split a doubleheader with Westport on Sunday at Kiwanis Field in Fairfield.
Westport took game one, 7-0. Fairfield came back to take game two, 3-1. The big hit for Fairfield was Tim Donahue's go-ahead single in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie.
In game one, Will Meyers threw six innings allowing three earned runs, but the offense couldn't put anything together. Offensively, Fairfield had just five hits, three of those coming in the sixth inning.
Game two was a pitcher's dual. Westport got on the board in the second inning as they benefited from two Fairfield errors in the inning.
Kyle Carozza was terrific on the mound for Fairfield. Carozza threw six innings, allowing just two hits and three walks, while striking out nine.
Fairfield tied the game in the fifth. Matt Vivona walked to lead off the inning. He then stole second base. Vivona moved to third on Charlie Swanson's single.
Two batters later, with Charlie Mulhall at the plate, Vivona came home to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at one.
In the sixth, Griffin Dodder led off with a double down the left field line. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Liam Grady.
Donahue then lined the first pitch he saw to center field to bring in Dodder and give Fairfield a 2-1 lead.
Donahue moved to third and then came in on a fly ball that was missed in left field to give Fairfield some insurance.
Aidan Browne came out of the Fairfield bullpen in the seventh and picked up the save, working around a walk. Browne struck out two in the scoreless inning.
Fairfield will face Trumbull on Monday and then close the regular season with a three game series with Greenwich Tuesday through Thursday, before the playoffs begin Saturday.
