17U American Legion Baseball: Sullivan's Pitching and Grady's Bat Earn Fairfield Split of Doubleheader with Westport

Liam Grady awaits a pitch. Grady had four hits in the DH.

Fairfield 17U split a doubleheader with Westport on Saturday morning at Kiwanis Field.

Fairfield won the first game 4-0 and fell in the second game, 6-2.

In game one, Zach Sullivan dominated on the mound, allowing just one hit, one walk and one hits batsmen in a complete game effort. The hit batter and walk came to back-to-back batters with two outs in the second inning and Sullivan was able to get out of trouble with a pop out to first base.

The lone hit was a one-out single in the third which was erased when the next batter hit a comeback to Sullivan and a 1-6-3 double play was turned. Sullivan retired the last 13 batters of the game.

Offensively for Fairfield, they were held off the board through the first three innings. In the fourth, Tim Pavlik led off with an infield single to short that he beat out and moved to second as the throw to first that got away. He moved to third on a wild pitch and then two batters later, Liam Grady singled down left field line to bring home Pavlik.

Two batters later, Kieran Rosengren singled to right field. The throw back in to the infield got away allowing Grady to come all the way around and score and Rosengren moved to second.

Fairfield added on in the sixth. Ethan Wallace walked to lead off the inning and Grady singled to left. A sacrifice bunt by Griffin Dodder moved the runners to second and third. Later in the inning, with two outs, Harry Short hit a ground ball to third base that was thrown away, allowing Wallace and Grady to come in and score and increase Fairfield lead to 4-0, which is how it would end.

In game two, Aidan Gouley was strong on the mound for the first two innings but ran into trouble in the third, where Westport put up five runs.

Westport got the first to on before David Gervasio singled to center to bring home Jameson Russell, who was hit by a pitch two lead off the inning. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, Colin Menninger singled to center to plate two more runs. Later in the inning, Will Wilds singed to bring in another run. The scoring for the inning was capped when Menninger came in from third on a wild pitch.

Fairfield put up two runs in the fourth. Grady singled to left to lead off the inning. Two batters later, James Blanco singled to put two on. Two batters later, after Grady and Blanco pulled off a double-steal, Rosengren singled to left to bring home Grady. The next batter, Dodder, singled to center to bring home Blanco.

Westport tacked on a sixth run in the sixth on a Jaron Kline RBI single.
