19U American Legion Baseball: Benway's Seventh Inning Heroics Back Sangiuolo's Strong Outing To Lift Fairfield To Win Over Bethel

Blake Benway's seventh inning three-run double the difference in Fairfield's win on Wednesday

Blake Benway's seventh inning three-run double lifted Fairfield 19U Militia past Bethel 3-0 on Wednesday night at Bethel High School. Benway's hit made Joey Sangiuolo a winner with a complete game effort on the mound.

Fairfield was held to just one hit, a Jack Corcoran single, and two baserunners (a Corcoran walk) through the first six innings. They broke through in the top of the seventh.

Ryan Cowles singled to lead off the inning and then stole second. Two batters later, Sam Swanson walked. Cowles and Swanson then pulled off a double steal. With first base open, Sean McAdams was intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a force at any base with one out.

That set up Benway's double that cleared the bases to five Fairfield the lead. Sangiuolo would set Bethel down in the bottom half of the frame to finish off the victory.

Fairfield will be back in action on Thursday at Staples with the conclusion of a game versus Westport that was suspended in the second inning due to rain on July 6. This will conclude the regular season. They will then begin the Regional Qualifying Tournament on Monday, July 26.
