19U American Legion Baseball: Fairfield Splits Day One of Coopers Cave Tournament at Saratoga

Jack Martin was strong on the mound in game two on Thursday. 

The 19U Fairfield Legion Militia split their first two games of the Coopers Cave Tournament in Saratoga on Thursday. 

Fairfield fell in the first game by a 7-4 score to Shrub Oak #1. The game was knotted at two through six before Shrub Oak put up 5 in the seventh, The Militia got two back in the bottom half but couldn't push any more across. Sean McAdams, Joey D'Elia and Edmund Hogan each had two hits in defeat. 

In their second game, they defeated Saratoga 4-1 behind strong pitching from Jack Martin and Kevin Donahue. With the game tied at one through five and a half innings, Fairfield put up three runs to secure the win. Hogan, D'Elia, Blake Benway, Jack Corcoran and Matt Sawyer all came up with clutch at bats in the bottom of the sixth. 

Fairfield will be back in action on Friday at 3pm and 5:30pm. The first game is against North Country and game two is against the Monarchs.

For the second straight day, Fairfield played an extra innings game in the state playoffs. Unlike, Saturday, the result was not in Fairfield's favor on Sunday.  Fairfield 19U fell to Greenwich 5-4 in nine innings at Julian Curtiss Field in Greenwich as Justin Zych came up with the two-run walk-off single as the Cannons came back from down two in the ninth to win.  Fairfield got on the board right away in the top of the first. Matt Vivona got hit by a pitch leading off the game. Three batters later, Charlie Mulhall drove a ball to deep left field allowing Vivona to come all the way around and score and Mulhall was at second with a stand up double.  Greenwich tied the game in the bottom half on the frame. With runners at the corners and two outs, Nate Jones singled to right field to bring in Zych and tie the game.  Fairfield re-took the lead in the top of the third. 17U American Legion Baseball: Westport Tops Fairfield To Take Weekend Series

After Fairfield 17U and Westport split Saturday's doubleheader in Westport, Sunday's game as Kiwanis Field in Fairfield was the rubber match.  The game went the way of the team further south on I-95 as Westport won by a final score of 14-6.  Fairfield got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Meyer Stransky singled to center field with one out and then Gabe Vahey doubled to deep center to bring home Stransky.  Westport tied the game and took the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth. They then broke the game open with seven runs in the fifth.  Fairfield would not go quietly, however. They had traffic throughout the game and in the bottom of the fifth, put up three runs.  With the bases loaded and one out, Doonan singled to left to bring in Thomas Hogan and everyone else moved up one base.  Jon Barzottini then reached on an error and Will Burnham singled to center to bring in two more runs.  Westport got one run in the sixth and two in the seventh.

19U American Legion Baseball: Fairfield Falls In Semifinals of Coopers Cave Tournament

Fairfield 19U Militia lost in the semifinals of the Coopers Cave Tournament in Saratoga Springs, New York. Fairfield fell in the semifinal game 4-2 to Clinton County, New York. They finish 3-2 in the tournament.  To recap the tournament:  In game one, they fell to Shrub Oak 7-4 on Thursday afternoon. Later Thursday afternoon, they picked up a 4-1 win against the host Saratoga Stampede. You can read about both of Thursday's games here.  Then on Friday, they won both games. They won the first game 15-1 against North County, New York and then took game two 9-3 over the New York Monarchs. The recap of Friday's games can be found here.  The three and one record would advance Fairfield into the semifinals of the tournament. They would get Saturday off before a Sunday semifinal, where they would suffer a loss.  The Militia will return to Connecticut and be back in action on Tuesday at Milford at 5:45.
