19U American Legion Baseball: Late Rally Comes Up Short As Fairfield Falls To Stamford
Stamford 19U Legion defeated Fairfield 7-5 on Wednesday evening at Kiwanis Field in Fairfield.
Stamford got out to a 5-0 lead and then held on for the two-run win as Fairfield got the tying run to the plate in the seventh.
The game was scoreless through two before Stamford put up a five spot in the third. With a run in and the bases loaded and nobody out, Jonathan Decker singled to right to bringtr in two runs to put Stamford up 3-0. Another run came in on a wild pitch before the scoring was capped on Declan Nestor's single to center.
Fairfield got on the board in the fifth. Griffin Dodder walked to lead off the inning and two batters later, Matt Vivona doubled to put runners at second and third. Liam Grady then singled down the left field line to bring home Dodder and Vivona and cut the Stamford lead to 5-2.
Stamford got the two runs back in the top of the sixth. Kieran Hackett hit a sacrifice fly and another run came in on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the seventh, Fairfield tried to mount a comeback. After one out singles from Grady and Corcoran, Charlie Mulhall tripled to left field to bring home both runs and cut the deficit to 7-4. Two batters later, Luke Anderson singled to right to plate Mulhall and bring the tying run to the plate. That's as close as Fairfield would get however.
Fairfield 19U is back in action on Saturday at Kiwanis Field.
