17U American Legion Baseball: Fairfield Tops Branford In Opening Game of State Tournament

Fairfield 17U defeated Branford 11-1 in five innings in the first game of the POD H CT State Tournament. 

Fairfield advances to the semifinal on Friday against Stamford at 5:30 at Cubeta Stadium in Stamford. Branford will face Stamford on Tuesday at 5:30 at Cubeta Stadium. 

Branford took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but Fairfield came back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back. 

Meyer Stransky doubled and Will Kane singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out. 

Gabe Vahey then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Stransky and tie the game at one. 

Fairfield took the lead in the second, scoring four times. 

With two on and out out, Jack Veas reached on an error to bring in a run and put Fairfield up 2-1. After a single loaded the bases, Will Kane drove a bases-clearing double to left field to extend the Fairfield lead to 5-1 after two innings. 

Fairfield extended their lead in the third. With two on and one out, Will Burnham doubled to left center to bring home both runs. 

Veas then singled to move Burnham to third. A wild pitch would bring Burnham across. Veas then came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Stransky. 

In the fourth Fairfield would score two more to extend the lead to 11-1. 

Thomas Hogan allowed just two hits and one unearned run, striking out three and walking two in five innings.
