17U American Legion Baseball: Fairfield Splits Twin Bill with Westport

Fairfield 17U Legion split a doubleheader with Westport on Saturday at Doubleday Field in Westport. 

Westport took game one 5-3, while Fairfield won the ladder 9-8. 

In the first game, Westport put up a four spot in the second and never looked back. 

Fairfield got on the board third. Luke Anderson hit a one-out triple to left field. Gabe Vahey then lined back to the mound and the throw to third to attempt to double Anderson off of third was off the mark, allowing him to come home. 

Fairfield got two more in the fourth helped out by two Westport errors. 

Westport tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth and that would cap the scoring. 

James McBennett threw the ball well for Fairfield, allowing just three earned runs in six innings. 

Game two was a wild back and forth affair that came down to the game's final pitch. 

Down a run, Wesport loaded the bases but Anderson was able to get a flyout to get the save and pick up an important win. 

Fairfield got three runs in the top of the first inning. 

Meyer Stransky led off the game with a single. Two batter later, Vahey doubled to dead center field in bring home Stransky. 

The next batter, Peter Doonan, doubled to bring to trade places with Vahey and put Fairfield up 2-0. Jon Barzottini then reached on an error to bring home Doonan. 

Westport got one run back in the bottom half of the first to cut the deficit to 3-1. 

The game remained 3-1 until the fourth. 

In the fourth, Fairfield added three more to go up 6-1. 

Emmett Tolisano walked with one out. Jack Veas and Thomas Hogan then each singled to load the bases. Stransky then  doubled to right to bring in Tolisano and Veas. 

Two batters later, Vahey singled on a hard ground ball to third to bring home Hogan to cap the scoring for the inning. 

Westport then then scored six unansered runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-6 lead. 

Fairfield would not go quietly, however. In the seventh, they not only tied the game, but re-took the lead. Doonan singled to center to lead off the inning. Barzotttini singled and McBennett walked to load the bases. 

Two batters later, Tolisano singled to right to bring in Doonan and Barzottini and give Fairfield an 8-7 lead. 

The next batter, Veas, singled to left to plate McBennett to make it 9-7 and cap the Fairfield scoring. 

Westport answered in the bottom half. After the first two men were retired quickly, an error and a single with runners on the corners. A double down the left field line plated a run and put the tying run 90 feet away at third base and the winning run in scoring position at second. 

Anderson was able to seal the deal with the flyout.
