19U American Legion Baseball: Fairfield Sweeps Doubleheader From Stratford

Fairfield 19U Militia swept a doubleheader from Stratford on Saturday at Kiwanis Field in Fairfield. The Militia won game one 5-0 and game two by a 9-3 score. 

Game one was a pitchers duel through the first three and a half innings as Fairfield's Joey Sangiuolo and Stratford's Hayden Gourley. 

Fairfield broke through in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded an one out, Ryan Cowles signed to left field to score Sam Swanson, who singled earlier in the inning. Fairfield tried to score another run on the play but the runner was gunned down at home plate. Later in the inning, Reece Palumbo came in to score on a wild pitch to increase Fairfield's lead to 2-0. 

Fairfield added on in the fifth. Matt Sawyer led off with a single. Two batter later, with Sawyer at second, Charlie Mulhall singled to left to bring home Sawyer. Later in the inning, with runners at the corners, Sam Swanson stole second and Stratford threw down to second base, allowing Mulhall to come in on the steal of home. Brady Pomer then singled home Swanson to cap the scoring at 5-0. 

On the mound, Sangiuolo was just dealing. He threw a complete game, allowing just five hits and walking none, while striking out 10 Stratford batters. 

In game two, Fairfield got the offense going early on in the first inning. Militia got the first two men on and then Sawyer doubled to right-center field to get Fairfield on the board. The next batter, Jack Corcoran, singled to center to bring in another run. Fairfield scored another run when Stratford pitcher Michael Hoffman tried to pick off Corcoran at first and the throw was wild, allowing Sawyer to come in from third. 

Later in the inning, Blake Benway's sacrifice fly to left field scored Corcoran from third to put Fairfield up 4-0. Fairfield capped the scoring for the inning when Palumbo scored on a wild pitch. 

Fairfield added another run in the third on Sean McAdams' sacrifice fly to center field to score Benway, who reached on a hit by pitch. 

Stratford got on the board in the fourth. Matt Browne had an RBI single to get Stratford on the board. They scored another on a double steal of third where Browne got into a rundown, allowing Pierce Barnum to come in and score from third to cut the Fairfield lead to 6-2. 

Fairfield got a run back in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Sam Swanson grounded out but Benway was able to come home and score. 

Fairfield added two more in the sixth. Sawyer walked to lead off the inning. Two batters later, with Sawyer now at third, Mulhall singed to center to increase the lead to 8-2. Three batters later, McAdams drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Mulhall. 

Stratford got one run in the top of the seventh, but Militia came away with the 9-3 victory. 

Fairfield improves to 8-1 on the season and will look to finish the sweep on Stratford on Sunday at 9:30am at Penders Field in Stratford.
