19U American Legion Baseball: Fairfield Tops RCP To Advance in Regional Qualifying Tournament
Fairfield got going right away in the top of the first. Matt Sawyer led off the game with a leadoff walk. Three batters later with Sawyer now at third following a stolen base and then moving to third on a fly ball, Jack Corcoran reached on an error, allowing Sawyer to come in and score.
In the third, the Militia added a run. Sawyer doubled to lead off the inning and two batters later, Joey D'Elia singled to right to bring him in and put Fairfield up 2-0.
Two more runs came across for Fairfield in the fifth inning. Sawyer singled to lead off the inning and then stole second. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sean McAdams. D'Elia then reached on an infield single to put runners at the corners with one out. The next batter, Corcoran, grounded out to first, allowing Sawyer to score. Sam Swanson followed up with a double to center field to bring in D'Elia and put the Militia up 4-0.
RCP chipped into the deficit in the bottom half of the fifth. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Elias Deleon doubled to left field to plate two runs and cut the Fairfield lead to 4-2.
On the mound, it was the Hogan show. Edmund Hogan started and went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out five to pick up the win. Older brother, Phil, got the save, with a perfect seventh, including two strikeouts.
Fairfield will play in the semifinals on Friday against Meriden at 4pm at Muzzy Field in Bristol
