19U American Legion Baseball: Hogan's Complete Game Sends Fairfield to Regional Qualifying Tournament Championship
Fairfield 19U Militia defeated Meriden 4-0 in the Regional Qualifying Tournament semifinals on Friday at Muzzy Field in Bristol.
Fairfield will play Greenwich on Saturday at 1pm in the Regional Qualifying Tournament Championship. The winner will play NCL in the "If" game at 4pm.
The Militia redeemed themselves from a 1-0 loss to Meriden on July 26 in the first game of the tournament.
Fairfield put up three runs in the first inning and never looked back as Phil Hogan dominated on the mound. One day after closing out brother Edmund's six inning performance, Hogan threw a complete game, allowing four hits and waking just one. He struck out nine.
In that three run first, Matt Sawyer led off with a single and three batters later, with Sawyer at second, Jack Corcoran singled to left field. Sawyer came in to score on an error in left field on the play.
Two batter later, Blake Benway doubled to center field to plate two runs and extend the Fairfield lead to 3-0.
The game remained 3-0 until the sixth inning when Fairfield added an insurance run. Joey D’Elia singled and Corcoran walked before Sam Swanson moved the runners to second and third with a bunt.
Benway then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in D’Elia to cap the scoring.
Highlights: Sawyer had two hits and a run scored while Benway drove in three runs.
