19U American Legion Baseball: Sangiuolo's Arm Leads Fairfield Past Westport

Joey Sangiuolo delivers a pitch during Fairfield's win over Westport

Behind a complete-game shutout from Joey Sangiuolo, Fairfield 19U defeated Westport 4-0 on Monday evening at Kiwanis Field.

The game was scoreless through the first two and a half innings as Sangiuolo was holding Westport off the board and Ryan Friesen was dominating the Fairfield batters, including striking out the first seven he faced.

Fairfield got on the board in the bottom of the third. With two runners in scoring position and two outs, Sean McAdams singled sharply between the third baseman and shortstop hole into left field. Brady Pomer came in to score but Fairfield had the second runner thrown out at the plate.

That was all Sangiuolo would need as he scattered five hits, walked two and struck out seven to pick up the win. The win snaps a two-game losing streak for Fairfield.

Fairfield added on in the fifth off the Westport bullpen. With runners on first and second, Liam Grady dropped down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away allowing a run to score and Grady to reach. The next batter, Matt Sawyer, singled to left field to bring in another run.

With runners at the corners and nobody out, McAdams hit into a run-scoring double play to bring home Grady.

In the seventh, Westport loaded the bases with nobody out. Sangiuolo would then get back-to-back strikeouts before getting a game-ending groundout to Sawyer at first base to strand the bases loaded.

Fairfield improves to 11-3 and will take on Westport in the second half of the back-to-back on Tuesday at Staples HS.
